You know that feeling when you discover a flavor combination for the first time and it’s love at first taste? I had that experience a few weeks ago while grabbing brunch with a friend of mine at Market Bar. She ordered a muddled grape cocktail and I remember thinking to myself that grape didn’t sound like anything special, but I was oh so wrong!
Now I consider myself to be pretty adventurous with flavor, enjoying spicy cocktails, smoky cocktails, cocktails with egg whites, etc. Albeit I might not always fall in love with what I order but I’m always up for trying something new. For whatever reason muddled grape didn’t sound very interesting, but it was something new so I went for it. Not only did the pairing of grape and basil create a pleasant medley of flavor, it went down like water! By far this had to be the most refreshing cocktail I’ve ever had. I was immediately inspired to try my own version at home. Here’s how I went about it:
Step 1: Collect 1.5 – 2 cups of green grapes. I’ve also tried this recipe with muscat grapes which are a nice substitute for simple syrup if you have more of a sweet tooth like me.
Step 2: Tear 3 medium sized basil leaves.
Step 3: Add two shots of vodka. I am a total convert to Tito’s –thanks Elissa! Add desired amount of simple syrup (also optional).
Step 4: Muddle Muddle Muddle!
Step 5: Strain into ice-filled glass to avoid bits of basil in your teeth later on.
Step 6: Fill remainder of glass with soda water.
Step 7: Add a dash of bitters and stir with a straw. The bitters make the drink for me. I’m a total sucker for Angostura Bitters.
Step 8: Garnish with basil leaf & enjoy!
I plan on bringing this to picnics at the park or making a large batch for summer BBQs.
What’s your refreshing cocktail of choice? Have you discovered any surprising flavor combinations lately?
